Why Water Is Essential

We all know that water is essential to life; every system in the body needs it to function. Depending on a person’s age and amount of muscle, water makes up between 60 and 75 percent of the human body as a whole, 70 percent of the brain, and almost 90 percent of the lungs. Water is crucial for the fascia, which consists of about 70 percent water. It’s also critical for a healthy spine, since the spinal disks are more than 70 percent water. (In babies, the disks are 95 percent water, which shows how much we dry up as we age.) When these disks aren’t fully hydrated, they can’t perform their function of cushioning the vertebrae and the spinal nerves. As people age, these disks dry out, so it becomes even more important to consciously replenish their water supply. (The bodies of elderly people who are dehydrated contain as little as 50 percent water.) Whatever your age, you must be hydrated before you begin your stretching program! When fascia is dehydrated, it gets tight and inflamed and develops microtears. Trying to stretch inflamed fascia only creates more pain—plus, you’ll deprive yourself of at least 20 percent of the Ming Method’s potential benefit. So give yourself the two tests for healthy fascia and if they show that you’re not adequately hydrated, spend ten days getting your fascia good and wet.
