I don’t like municipal water. It’s very impure, full of lead, fluoride,
chlorine, and other unmentionable things. Lead causes a range of health
problems in adults as well as children. Chlorine has been linked to heart
disease, and fluoride is carcinogenic, damages collagen, and prevents certain
enzymes from working (it’s used in
rat poison for this reason). Researchers have also found plastic residues in
municipal water that many scientists suspect act as synthetic estrogens (xenoestrogens)
in the human body, causing cancer and other medical problems.
So I
recommend that you avoid drinking water straight from the tap. One alternative
is bottled water. However, bottled water is expensive and generates a lot of
plastic trash. For me, buying a good filter is the way to go. It’s cheaper in the long run and kinder to the
environment. If you don’t want to
spend a
lot, at the very least use a charcoal-based filter system like
Brita or Pur. That’s better
than nothing, although it doesn’t take care
of all the problems in the water. Fancier filters that remove more impurities
are better. I use an Akai Ionizer Plus water purifier that filters chemicals
and bacteria, treats the water with ultraviolet light, and ionizes it. The
ionizing process is said to make the water and the minerals it contains easier
for the body to absorb. The Akai is top-of-the-line and not cheap, but there
are plenty of in-between options.
Whatever
system you choose, store your filtered water in glass containers. There is evidence
that any form of plastic eventually leaches chemicals into the water (even
polycarbonate plastic, which previously was thought not to leach). If you need
to carry bottled water around, you have to use plastic, but try not to drink
water that has sat in the container for more than a few hours, especially at
high temperatures.
