Learning to Read Your Body

Determining for yourself whether you’re ready to stretch should help embed in your brain the idea that you can learn to read your body. Your body tells you a lot, as in the sign noted previously of feeling more energetic when you wake up in the morning. People tend to rely too much on high-tech diagnostic tests. If I feel lousy, I know I’m not well. I don’t need a doctor to
tell me this. By the same token, you know when you’re feeling better—you just need to pay attention.

All the technology we live with has disconnected us from our physical being. We’ve forgotten that nature’s profound intelligence gave us our body—it’s not simply another machine to be manipulated by technology— and we’ve lost the ability to communicate with it. Most people are so disconnected from their bodies that they actually have no clue when their problems are improving—like Diane, who was so focused on her hip pain that she completely forgot that her knee and back pain was totally gone and only remembered when I questioned her. As if she couldn’t believe that complete relief was possible, she didn’t perceive it when it actually happened. If you’re one of these disconnected types—or suspect you may be—rely on a mate, loved one, or close friend, who most likely can detect changes more accurately than you can yourself.

The moral is you must maintain an open mind. If you find yourself feeling better, accept it—don’t fight it. For me, the best patient is an optimistic person who wants to get better and remains hopeful. A neutral patient is OK, too. This person says, “I’m skeptical, but I’ll listen to your argument and give it a try.” The worst patient is the one who just won’t believe that getting better is possible—even when the pain decreases. This person has been brainwashed to believe that the only way to fix problems is with drugs and surgery. If you’ve been entertaining such thoughts, try to put them aside just for these ten days. Write down your before-and-after observations as I suggested earlier. If at the end of ten days you find yourself feeling better, you’ll have your own evidence that the conventional medical model doesn’t have all the answers.
